The first Ironman competition, held in Hawaii in 1978, immediately established this as one of the most challenging athletic endeavours in the world. Comprised of a swimming, cycling and running race, Ironman is certainly the ultimate test of physical strength and endurance, but it’s also a test of mental strength and perseverance.
Since the mid-90s, the premiere triathlon competition in this country has been Subaru Ironman Canada. A top triathlete must possess the versatility to excel in a variety of environments and the resilience to outlast the competition — the same is true of a world-class vehicle. This is why Subaru Canada is a proud supporter of this competition and of the athletes who push themselves to the limit.
Subaru Canada is proud to support active, healthy lifestyles. To show our support, we are offering a $750 cash-back athlete rebate on the purchase or lease of a new Subaru vehicle from an authorized Canadian dealer. Please click the button for more information.
Building on the legacy of the original, Subaru Ironman competitions are full Ironman events consisting of a 3.8-km swim, 180-km bike race and 42.2-km run. There are few physical or mental challenges to match the classic Ironman. Preparation for a full Ironman can take years; it can take even longer to become a top competitor; finishing an Ironman is a massive accomplishment in and of itself.
The series is currently made up of two spectacular events. Subaru Ironman Canada makes use of many venues from the 2010 Winter Olympics in Whistler, including the clean and shallow waters of Alta Lake, the Sea-to-Sky Highway and the Olympic Plaza. Likewise, Subaru Ironman Mont Tremblant is based in the internationally acclaimed ski village of the same name and encompasses all the natural beauty the Laurentian Mountains has to offer.
The Ironman 70.3 is effectively half a full Ironman event, but this competition still requires high levels of determination, discipline and resilience. The event consists of a 1.9-km swim, 90-km bike ride and 21.1-km run. There are three Subaru Ironman 70.3 races on the calendar and each one is a favourite with competitors and spectators alike.
Subaru Ironman 70.3 Victoria, presented by Saunders Subaru, takes place in one of Canada’s most beautiful cities and is a tremendously popular event. Subaru Ironman 70.3 Mont Tremblant has quickly become a favourite for its beautiful surroundings and abundance of family-friendly activities. Subaru Ironman 70.3 Muskoka, presented by Subaru of Muskoka, sees competitors swim pristine Peninsula Lake before riding around the Lake of Bays, and running past cascading waterfalls and pink granite rock.
The Ironman 5150 is the Olympic distance triathlon event, comprised of a 1.5-km swim, 40-km bike ride and 10-km run. While these distances fall short of the original Ironman standards, the effort required to be competitive is just as significant.
The Subaru Shawnigan Lake Triathlon is an Ironman 5150 event that takes place on picturesque Shawnigan Lake on Vancouver Island, just north of Victoria. This is Canada’s first open-water triathlon and, in addition to the swim, the event sees competitors taking to the Trans Canada Trail and powering through the stunning west coast rainforests.
The Subaru Mont Tremblant Triathlon follows the same format, but takes place in the beautiful Laurentian Mountains in Quebec. The race begins at the Mont Tremblant Beach and Tennis Club with the swim course in Lac Tremblant. This is followed by the bike portion along the newly paved course that leads towards Lac Supérieur and then a run back in the direction of Lac Tremblant.
Lastly, the Subaru 5150 Vancouver Triathlon is the Canadian Championship race that features a new course encompassing many beautiful sites in this stunning city. The swim takes place in Coal Harbour, the bike race whirls around Stanley Park, and the run goes along the iconic Stanley Park and Coal Harbour seawall before returning to downtown Vancouver.
Launched in 2004 in the U.S., IRON GIRL has since gone on to generate global appeal for this series of competitions aimed at females of all ages. Since its inception, the IRON GIRL series has expanded from 5K and 10K races to half-marathons, mother/daughter races at all distances and sprint triathlons. The series is a supportive, energetic and empowering environment that encourages females to get out there, be active and have fun.
The IRON GIRL Canada competition — which takes place at Nelles Beach Park in Grimsby, Ont. — consists of a 500-m shallow water swim, 20-km bike and 5-km run. With the backdrop of Lake Ontario and the Niagara region’s bountiful farmland, this event is as picturesque as it is challenging.
The IRON GIRL Vancouver event takes place at Jericho Beach Park and consists of a 750-m swim, 20-km bike race and 5-km run. The swim is around Locarno Beach in beautiful English Bay; the bike rolls through the picturesque campus of the University of British Columbia; the run follows the trails along the Spanish Banks Beaches.
Using sport and competition as a starting point, the Subaru IRONKIDS program is designed to inspire children to embrace active, positive and healthy lifestyles. Young athletes aged 3-15 can participate in a variety of events, including triathlon, aquathlon, duathlon and running races, many of them held in the days leading up to the Subaru IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 races. The events encourage participation, safety, fitness and fun.
There are three Subaru IRONKIDS events on the calendar. The Subaru IRONKIDS Canada Fun Run, which takes place in Whistler, BC, consists of two different events, a 1-km and a 1.5-km run. The Subaru Mont Tremblant IRONKIDS Fun Run includes a 1-km and a 5-km run. And the Subaru Muskoka IRONKIDS Fun Run features a 500-m run for toddlers and a 1-km run for all other junior athletes.
