More strength and safety,
more confidence

The current-generation Subaru Forester pushes the edge of the safety envelope, incorporating the very latest thinking in active and passive safety technology. Highlights of this model include the ultra-strong Subaru Global Platform, enhanced Subaru EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology, available dual-function X-MODE® and the available award-winning Subaru DriverFocus® system. These advances serve to increase the strength and inherent safety of the Forester and take driver confidence to uncommon heights.

Standing on guard, driving with confidence

All versions of the 2023 Subaru Forester come standard with class-leading active safety systems, including Subaru Symmetrical Full-Time AWD, Active Torque Vectoring, Traction Control, Vehicle Dynamics Control and EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology. These systems are supported by striking agility, superior visibility and, on select trims, the available DriverFocus® Distraction Mitigation System. This advanced approach to active safety brings greater levels of confidence into sharp focus.

EyeSight Disclaimer Brief

EyeSight® is a driver assist system, which may not operate optimally under all driving conditions. The driver is always responsible for safe and attentive driving. System effectiveness depends on many factors such as vehicle maintenance, and weather and road conditions. See Owner's Manual for complete details on system operation and limitations. Please remember to turn off EyeSight® when going through a car wash.

Superior Visibility

The Forester is designed and engineered for exceptional visibility. The A-pillar and partition windows are integrated into the front doors to reduce the size of blind spots. The side mirrors are placed on the door panels instead of the windows to improve visibility, forward and back, and they feature a large glass surface area. The windshield, windows and rear hatch are all large as well, giving the passenger cabin a greenhouse effect. These decisions, combined with the classic high seating position, create a supremely confident feeling behind the wheel.

Rearview Camera

When the Forester is shifted into reverse, this standard rearview camera projects a crystal-clear image of what’s behind the vehicle onto the centre console screen. A washer system helps ensure that camera lens is always clear of dirt, mud and grime, making this safety feature an invaluable addition in all sorts of everyday driving conditions.

EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology

The next-generation version of the award-winning EyeSight® system is standard on all trim levels. This system features stereo cameras mounted behind the windshield that capture a wide angle view of the road, help identify potential danger ahead and provide assistance to the driver when needed most. Utilizing improved recognition software and control software, the new EyeSight® incorporates: Automatic Emergency Steering, Adaptive Cruise Control with Vehicle Hold, Pre-Collision Braking, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, Lane Centring Assist, Lane Keep Assist and Sway Warning, and Lead Vehicle Start Alert. When equipped with EyeSight®, previous versions of the Subaru Forester have earned the highest possible front-crash prevention ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Subaru DriverFocus® – Distraction Mitigation System (DMS)

Available on the Limited and Premier trim levels, this award-winning system utilizes a camera angled at the driver’s face and facial recognition software to monitor fatigue or lack of attention. When the driver begins to lose focus, DriverFocus® sends out a helpful alert, like an automated co-driver. The system is also able to adjust climate control settings by reading hand gestures. DriverFocus® also stores the preferences for up to five drivers, including the position of the seats and side mirrors, climate control settings and gauge readouts on the multi-function display.

Subaru Rear/Side Vehicle Detection (SRVD) System

Available on the Touring trim level and up, SRVD has three distinct and very useful functions. Blind Spot Detection identifies vehicles travelling in your blind spots. When changing lanes, Lane Change Assist detects fast-approaching vehicles coming from behind. Lastly, when reversing out of a parking space or driveway, Rear Cross Traffic Alert signals the driver of any vehicles or pedestrians approaching from either the left or right.

Reverse Automatic Braking

Available on the Touring trim level and up, this system automatically applies the brakes whenever the risk of collision with someone or something behind the vehicle is high. The system also incorporates a rear obstruction warning feature, which signals drivers using different alarm patterns that change based on the distance from the obstruction.

High Beam Assist (HBA)

Standard on all Forester trim levels, this system automatically controls when the high beams switch on and off. When the system detects an oncoming vehicle or the distance to the vehicle in front has reduced, the high beams automatically switch off. When other vehicles are far enough away, the high beams switch on again. Simple and effective.

Steering Responsive Headlights

Standard on all trim levels, these headlights automatically turn in the direction that the driver is turning the steering wheel. When the vehicle is turning left, the headlights angle to the left; when turning right, the headlights arc to the right. This feature helps illuminate the road ahead, even when that road isn’t straight, bringing increased visibility and safety into sharp focus.

Braking System

The anti-lock braking system (ABS) incorporates the latest active safety technology to generate increased confidence, particularly in times of need. Electronic Brake-force Distribution automatically adjusts front/rear brake pressure according to different vehicle loads. Brake Override cuts engine power when the brake and accelerator pedals are applied at the same time. Brake Assist automatically boosts stopping power in emergency braking situations. In addition, the responsiveness of the Pre-Collision Braking feature is now enhanced with an electric brake booster.

Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC)

Standard on all trim levels, this advanced system utilizes multiple sensors to monitor vehicle dynamics, assess road conditions and determine whether the vehicle is following the driver’s intended course. When the vehicle nears the limits of stability, the system automatically adjusts the AWD torque distribution, engine output and braking force at each wheel to help keep the vehicle on-course. The Active Torque Vectoring system, incorporated into VDC, also applies braking force to the inside front wheel and engine torque to the outer front wheel to aid in cornering. These advanced systems give drivers of all abilities the feeling of added security and increased confidence under all possible driving conditions.

Stands and delivers

The 2023 Subaru Forester features a wide range of advanced passive safety systems designed to deliver class-leading levels of protection. The Subaru Global Platform is the starting point, setting the stage for an ultra-strong frame that envelopes all occupants like a suit of armour. In the event that an accident proves unavoidable, the frame and other systems work together to minimize damage to the vehicle and ensure greater peace of mind.

Advanced Ring-shaped Reinforcement Frame

This proprietary advanced frame design was reengineered for the current-generation Forester and absorbs more impact energy than on previous versions. The design incorporates more high-tensile strength steel, which creates stronger joints and a superior structure overall. The frame channels impact energy coming from all directions and diverts it away from the passenger cabin. A front crumple zone provides superior protection in the event of a frontal impact, while ultra-tough bumper beams and a reinforced counterforce support provide protection in all types of collisions, including a rollover.

Airbags

A full complement of supplemental restraints is standard equipment on all Subaru Forester trim levels and a key reason why safety ratings for the vehicle are so consistently strong. This comprehensive approach to passive safety includes dual-stage deployment front airbags, front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, side-curtain airbags with rollover sensors for front and rear outboard occupants, and a driver’s knee airbag.

Injury-reducing Seats and Seatbelt Systems

The front seats utilize ultra-strong frames, energy-absorbing mounting and active headrests to reduce the chance of whiplash in the event of a collision. Height-adjustable front seatbelts with pretensioners and rear outboard seatbelts with pretensioners hold passengers firmly in place, while load limiters ease peak forces to the chest. The locking tongue system is designed to lock the front seat lap belts to better restrain occupants and reduce the chance of injury. The lower anchor bars of the ISO FIX/LATCH system are positioned for easy access and to protect younger passengers riding in compatible child safety seats. All trim levels come equipped with the Rear Seat Reminder and Rear Seatbelt Reminder.

Break-away Engine

In the event of a head-on collision, the SUBARU BOXER® engine and Lineartronic® CVT are designed to absorb impact energy and then break away from the vehicle structure entirely. Once free from the structure, the engine and transmission drop down to the ground to ensure they don’t intrude into the passenger cabin.
