Engineered for excellence
The Subaru Forester has always been an engaging SUV and the 2021 model is no exception. The latest Forester is built on the Subaru Global Platform, stiffer and more rigid than the previous platform, and this allows for even more precise tuning of the suspension system. The SUBARU BOXER® engine — more powerful and efficient than before — is linked to the latest version of the Lineartronic® CVT. The Forester also features the remarkable Subaru Symmetrical Full-Time AWD system and, on certain models, a refined version of X-MODE®. The result: An authentic SUV with incredible stability, impressive efficiency and dynamic all-road/all-weather performance.
The legendary SUBARU BOXER® engine
The naturally aspirated 2.5L SUBARU BOXER® 4-cylinder is a vastly different engine compared to the previous generation with some 90% different components. Lighter than before and equipped with direct-injection, this engine boasts superior horsepower, torque, driveability and fuel efficiency. The standard Auto Stop Start system boosts efficiency even more, as does a thermal management system that helps engine warm-up during cold starts. All trim levels are equipped with the SI-DRIVE® engine management system with the eco-friendly Intelligent (I) mode and more responsive Sport (S) mode. The Sport trim level features Intelligent (I) and Sport Sharp (S#) modes, the latter engineered for even more spirited driving adventures.
Transmission + Symmetrical Full-Time AWD
The 2021 Forester comes equipped with a Subaru Lineartronic® CVT that’s been tuned to showcase the strengths of the SUBARU BOXER® and the Subaru Symmetrical Full-Time AWD system. Its engineering design helps to reduce noise and harshness while providing greater operational smoothness. This CVT features a wider set of ratios to boost acceleration, driveability, fuel efficiency and shift feel overall.
Lineartronic® CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission)
The well-engineered and efficient Lineartronic® CVT is linked to a multi-plate transfer clutch version of Subaru Symmetrical Full-Time AWD. This set-up delivers predictable handling at all times and under all conditions, shifting engine torque to the wheels with grip under hard acceleration or in low-traction conditions. Available paddle shifters mounted behind the steering wheel and the optional manual shift mode deliver even more control and crisp response.
Enhanced X-MODE®
There are two available versions of the tried and true X-MODE® system, which allows you to tackle the steepest of inclines with even more confidence. The dial on the standard version controls the operation of the VDC and X-MODE®. The available “dual function” version has a dial that lets you select between two different X-MODE® settings tailored to specific driving conditions — namely, snow/dirt and deep snow/mud. This version is available on the Sport model trim and up.
Hill Descent Control
With the X-MODE® system activated, Hill Descent Control automatically maintains a constant speed when driving down steep declines. With the Hill Descent Control handling all the speed control and braking duties to maintain traction and control, the driver is free to focus on steering and negotiating obstacles ahead.
Auto Vehicle Hold (AVH)
Standard on all trim levels, Auto Vehicle Hold automatically holds the vehicle in place at red lights. This feature helps reduce driver fatigue, ensures that every getaway on an incline is free from concerns of rolling backwards and helps reduce the chance of incidents occurring at intersections.
All-new rock-solid chassis
The 2021 Forester features a lightweight, super-strong chassis that delivers superior levels of handling, stability, comfort and quietness. The track is wider, for an even more planted feel. The fully independent suspension system has been designed for increased refinement. The Forester also features a quick steering ratio, impressive ground clearance and rugged capability overall, making this authentic SUV equally at home on twisty tarmac or along a cottage trail.
Subaru Global Platform
The Subaru Global Platform provides dramatic gains in terms of strength and rigidity, resulting from the increased use of high-tensile steel and improved design. The increased strength of the frame structure and joints helps reduce vibrations and resonance felt in the body, floor, seats and steering wheel. Reduced twisting forces on the frame and body translate into a smoother and more comfortable ride. The Subaru Global Platform design is significantly better at absorbing the energy coming from a front-end collision, rear-end collision or side impact. All of these changes, combined with the well-tuned suspension system and lower centre of gravity, give the 2021 Forester more precise steering, greater straight-line stability, more responsive handling and greater safety.

Subaru Global Platform
Front Suspension
The proven MacPherson® front strut-type suspension system has been tuned to provide greater stability, more direct response and improved feedback to the driver. The addition of k-shaped cross members reduces lateral forces and vibration. More commonly found on sports cars, this set-up works with the wider track and 220 mm of ground clearance to give the Forester crisp steering, remarkable handling and genuine go-anywhere capability.
Rear Suspension
The double-wishbone suspension system has been designed to reduce noise, slash vibration, increase stability and boost control. With increased rigidity and responsiveness of the rear suspension and the rear stabilizer bar being mounted directly to the body, body roll has been cut by some 50%. Expertly balancing sporty handling with refinement, this authentic SUV handles rough roads and sharp corners with equal poise and precision.
