About Subaru

The challenge of the Nürburgring

One of the biggest challenges for amateur and professional racers alike, the 24 Hours Nürburgring, is also the most important production car race in the world. First held in 1970, this legendary race now draws factory-supported teams from leading manufacturers, including Subaru. The race requires a full complement of skills from the driver and the team. The track length can vary, but it always includes the Nordschleife (“North Loop”), a 20.832-km stretch characterized by 33 left-hand turns, 40 right-hand turns, staggering elevation changes, and stomach-churning jumps and bumps.

Since 1992, Subaru has used the track itself and the 24 Hours Nürburgring to prove the engineering of our vehicles and to develop technology that inspires driver confidence under all possible conditions. Competing at high speeds for 24 straight hours has a way of revealing weakness in a car — just finishing the race is a significant accomplishment. The fact that the Subaru WRX STI has taken four SP3T class wins in the recent past (in 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2016) proves that we’re on the right track.

After the team*3 started the final from the 2nd position earned in qualifying, they took over the lead with sophisticated teamwork. Driven by Carlo van Dam (Netherlands), Marcel Lasée (Germany), Tim Schrick (Germany) and Hideki Yamauchi (Japan), the WRX STI completed 121 laps (approx. 3,070km) in 24 hours and claimed a class win. STI has competed in the Nürburgring 24-Hour Race for 9 consecutive years. This marks the 4th win in the SP3T class for STI following its victory in 2015 race.

The victory is a testament that the Subaru WRX STI is capable of fully exerting its AWD (All-Wheel Drive) sports performance on circuits such as the Nürburgring which is one of the most challenging and dangerous tracks in the world that is open to the public.
