The 2023 Subaru Legacy offers striking agility, superior visibility, a world-class all-wheel drive system, Vehicle Dynamics Control, Active Torque Vectoring and a low centre of gravity— in other words, all the tools needed to be an active safety superstar. When you combine these technologies with next-generation thinking in the form of standard EyeSight^®◊ Driver Assist Technology and the available DriverFocus^® Distraction Mitigation System, the cause of active safety is elevated to new heights.

Heightened Visibility

When superior engineering and smart design meet in the middle, everything becomes clear. Using this as an operating principle, the Subaru Legacy has been engineered and designed to offer exceptional visibility. The steeply raked windshield, narrow A-pillars, generous glass area, high seating position and door mounted side mirrors work together to keep blind spots to a minimum.

EyeSight^® Driver Assist Technology

The latest generation of this award-winning active safety system is standard on all versions of the Subaru Legacy. The system utilizes two cameras to monitor activity on the road ahead, help identify potential danger and provide assistance to the driver when needed most. The Legacy GT features the new wide-angle mono camera, which allows the system to be even more effective. EyeSight^® incorporates numerous advanced active safety systems in one: Pre-collision Braking, Pre-collision Brake Assist, Pre-collision Throttle Management, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Centring Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Sway Warning, Lane Keep Assist and Lead Vehicle Start Alert. A new feature, Emergency Automatic Steering, helps you avoid collisions by providing automatic steering and pre-collision braking assistance.

High Beam Assist

This feature, standard on all versions of the Subaru Legacy, allows the driver to keep the high beams on at all times. When the EyeSight^® cameras detect an oncoming vehicle or the distance to the vehicle in front is reduced, High Beam Assist automatically dims the headlights. Then, when other vehicles are far enough away, the system switches the high beams on again.

Reverse Automatic Braking

Standard on all Legacy models, this system detects people or objects behind the vehicle and automatically applies the brakes if a collision seems imminent. The system also incorporates a warning feature with different alarm patterns depending on how far the Legacy is away from the person or object.

Subaru Rear/Side Vehicle Detection System (SRVD)

Another advanced safety feature that’s standard on all Legacy models, the SRVD has three distinct functions: Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Blind Spot Detection identifies vehicles behind the C-pillars and in other blind spots, while Lane Change Assist detects vehicles from behind approaching quickly in an adjacent lane. Using a sensor in the back of the vehicle, Rear Cross Traffic Alert signals drivers of approaching vehicles while reversing, such as out of a parking space or driveway.y.

Rearview Camera

When you select reverse, this camera projects an image of what’s behind the Legacy onto the centre console screen. The rearview camera is located close to the centre of the vehicle and captures a wide view to ensure a more natural image that’s free of distortion. The useful dynamic guide lines feature show the driver which direction to turn the steering wheel, making the act of reversing easier than ever.

DriverFocus^® Driver Monitoring System (DMS)

Available on the Limited and GT trim levels, this award-winning system utilizes a camera angled at the driver’s face and facial recognition software to monitor fatigue or lack of attention. When the driver begins to show signs of losing focus, the system sends out a helpful alert, like an automated co-driver. The DriverFocus^® system stores the preferences for up to five drivers, including the position of the seats and side mirrors, climate control settings and gauge readouts on the multi-function display.

Steering Responsive LED Headlights

These headlights automatically follow the steering angle of the vehicle and point in the direction of the corners, providing better illumination and increased levels of safety. The headlights themselves also cast a brighter and whiter beam for improved visibility at night. This system is standard on all Subaru Legacy models.

VDC with Active Torque Vectoring

The standard VDC^† system is equipped with advanced sensors to monitor and analyze if the vehicle is following the driver’s intended course. When the limits of stability are approached, the system automatically adjusts the AWD torque distribution, engine output and brakes at each wheel to help the driver take corrective action.

^† VDC is also known as electronic stability control.

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)

This system incorporates key safety advancements, including Electronic Brake-force Distribution, which automatically adjusts front/rear brake balance, Brake Override to cut engine power when the brakes are applied, and Brake Assist for added stopping power in emergency-braking situations. The system also incorporates Auto Vehicle Hold (AVH), which keeps the vehicle in place when you take your foot off the brake after coming to a stop, even on an incline.

Strong, enduring, protecting

Built on the ultra-strong Subaru Global Platform, the Subaru Legacy has a more robust envelope to better protect all occupants in the event of a collision. This platform is the starting point for a passive safety strategy that sees the Legacy continue to deliver class-leading levels of protection. Added to this inherent strength is a collection of technologically advanced safety systems that work together to minimize the harm from collisions or help to avoid them altogether.

Advanced Ring-shaped Reinforcement Frame

This proprietary frame incorporates high-tensile steel, connects the roof to the side pillars and the floor, and utilizes cross-members to create a unified and super-strong structure. For the Subaru Legacy, the design has been further refined to create an even stronger envelope that is able to absorb and divert even more collision energy.

Airbags

The Subaru Legacy features a full complement of supplemental restraints, including driver and front passenger front and side-impact airbags, front passenger seat cushion airbag, driver’s knee airbag and side-curtain airbags for front and rear outboard occupants. The network of smart sensors connected to these restraints includes a rollover sensor, another example of an unwavering focus on providing class-leading standards for passive safety.

Injury-reducing Seats and Seatbelt Systems

The front seats on the Subaru Legacy are engineered to reduce the chances of whiplash through the use of energy-absorbing mountings, active headrests and super-strong frames. Height-adjustable front seatbelts with pretensioners hold passengers firmly in place, while load limiters ease peak forces to the chest. The ISO-FIX/LATCH system now features a lower anchor bar to make it easier to secure younger passengers riding in compatible child safety seats. Standard on all trim levels is the Rear Seatbelt Reminder.

Break-away Engine

In the event of a head-on collision, the SUBARU BOXER^® engines and transmissions in the Subaru Legacy are designed to absorb crash energy, then break away from the vehicle structure and drop below the passenger cabin. This design helps ensure that as little collision energy as possible reaches the occupants, thereby securing their safety.
