Unsurpassed engineering,

all-road superiority

The 2023 Subaru Outback is a compelling blend of longstanding Subaru engineering excellence and the latest technological advances. First introduced on other Subaru models, the Subaru Global Platform brings to this unique utility vehicle greater strength, increased stability and superior driving dynamics. The legendary Subaru Symmetrical Full-Time AWD system, linked to the choice of two dependable SUBARU BOXER® engines and three versions of the Lineartronic® CVT, enables reliable response on all types of surfaces. Superb handling, rugged all-road/all-weather capability, genuine versatility and a level of confidence behind the wheel that is unmatched in its class: This is the Outback story.

Higher-performing SUBARU BOXER® engines

The 2023 Subaru Outback is available with the choice of two energetic SUBARU BOXER® engines. The direct-injection 2.5-litre 4-cylinder, linked to a Lineartronic® Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), is engineered to perfectly balance powerful response with outstanding fuel economy. The direct-injection turbocharged 2.4-litre 4-cylinder is connected to two potent and capable CVTs. The Outback WildernessTM gets a high-torque CVT tuned for more power in the low-end range while Limited, Limited XT and Premier XT trims receive a high-torque CVT to create class-leading levels of performance. Both engines incorporate weight-saving measures and advanced technologies to boost efficiency, improve acceleration and heighten driver engagement.

2023 Subaru Outback Transmissions + Symmetrical AWD

Transmissions + Symmetrical AWD

The Subaru Outback is available with three efficient and capable versions of the Lineartronic® CVT, one linked to the 2.5-litre 4-cylinder and the other two paired with the turbocharged 2.4-litre 4-cylinder. These transmissions have been refined for greater efficiency, reduced noise and heightened driveability. Each drivetrain is fully integrated with the Subaru Symmetrical Full-Time AWD system to create unsurpassed levels of control and confidence under all possible conditions. These drivetrains give the Outback the superior performance of a full-time AWD utility with the fuel-efficiency of a front-wheel drive vehicle.

Three Versions of X-MODE®

The 2023 Subaru Outback comes equipped with one of three different versions of the capable X-MODE® system, which allows you to tackle the steepest of inclines with even more confidence. On the standard version, the touchscreen functions control the operation of the VDC and X-MODE® together. The Onyx trim level comes standard with dual-function X-MODE®, which features even more capability in tough conditions. Meanwhile, the enhanced dual-function version, available exclusively on the Outback Wilderness trim level, has touchscreen controls that let you select between two different settings tailored to specific driving conditions—namely, snow/dirt and deep snow/mud, both settings available even at higher speeds.

Hill Descent Control

With all versions of the X-MODE® system activated, Hill Descent Control automatically maintains a constant speed when travelling down steep inclines. In this scenario, the driver is free from the demands of controlling the brakes and can focus exclusively on navigating the road ahead.

Chassis for strength, versatility, and refinements

Built on the Subaru Global Platform, the chassis is characterized by greater strength, reduced noise, reduced harshness and heightened safety overall. The use of more high-tensile steel in key areas has created greater torsional stiffness compared to the previous version. These measures allow the revised suspension system to create even better handling properties, including less body roll, crisper response and higher levels of confidence-inspiring control. The suspension on the Outback WildernessTM has been tuned to compensate for the increased ground clearance to continue providing the responsive handling that Outback drivers have come to expect.

Front Suspension

The MacPherson® front strut-type suspension system is renowned for its superior driver feedback, response and stability. As with all Subaru vehicles built on the Subaru Global Platform, the system features an additional k-shaped cross member brace and other elements engineered to reduce lateral forces and vibration, while increasing comfort and securing ride quality. Normally found on high-end luxury and performance cars, the k-shaped brace is also the perfect addition to a genuine go-anywhere utility vehicle.

Rear Suspension

The double-wishbone rear suspension system on the Subaru Outback has been fine-tuned to reduce noise and vibration, while increasing control and stability. To create more precise handling, the rear stabilizer bar is mounted directly to the body instead of through rubber bushings, resulting in 50% less body roll. This design creates a composed ride over even the roughest surfaces and opens up more interior space for passengers and their cargo.
